Saudi Arabia: A Small Step for Women

Saudi Arabia will let divorced women and widows manage their family affairs without approval from a man or a court order, a state-aligned newspaper said Wednesday. The rights of Saudi women are severely restricted by a powerful clergy and an ultraconservative society. The newspaper, Al Riyadh, said the Interior Ministry would issue family identity cards not only to men, but also to divorced women and widows, granting them powers that include having access to records, registering children for schools and authorizing medical procedures.
