Vatican’s recognition of Palestine comes into effect

Rome (IINA) – The Vatican announced on Saturday that the “Comprehensive Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Palestine”, signed in June, has taken into full effect. This comes over two years after the Roman Catholic Church recognized the Palestinian territories as a sovereign state in February 2013.

“With reference to the Comprehensive Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Palestine, signed on 26 June 2015, the Holy See and the State of Palestine have notified each other that the procedural requirements for its entry into force have been fulfilled,” a Vatican statement said.

For his part, Palestine’s ambassador to the Vatican Issa Issa Kassissieh welcomed the Vatican’s recognition of Palestine, stressing commitment to the implementation of the comprehensive convention, which was the result of negotiations between the two sides.

He called on the world countries, especially European states to follow the example of the Vatican to recognize the state of Palestine on the 1967 border and to confirm support of the two-state solution.
The Vatican’s recognition of the state of Palestine – joining dozens of others – followed a November 2012 vote in favor of recognition by the UN General Assembly.
